Emerging 1985 is the second in The Renaissance Society's series of exhibitions which survey the work of Chicago artists without current commercial gallery affiliation. The artists were selected by 25 major figures in the Chicago art community. The primary objective of Emerging 1985 is to gain a public audience for new and emerging Chicago art and artists. In addition, Emerging will generate evaluation and criticism regarding the scope, value and direction of this body of work.

Emerging 1985 is installed with the cooperation of the Illinois Arts Council in the State of Illinois Art Gallery of the new State of Illinois Center in downtown Chicago.
