Essay by Dennis Adrian, brief selection of propositions from Ludwig Wittgenstein

"In everyday life we are virtually surrounded by impure colors. All the more remarkable that we have formed a concept of pure colors."
Ludwig Wittgenstein

Transcending abstract geometric formalism, Ramirez's shaped canvases attain a range of spirituality with an economy of formal means. In his essay, "A Critical Survey of Form and Content", Adrian considers Ramirez's 1979 exhibition as "the irreducible germ of an ideal retrospective." He links the works spiritual component to Friedrich and Rothko, in a continuation of painting's quest for the sublime.
