Prina is an important West-coast-based conceptual artist who throughout his career has explored the significance of time and history in articulate and provocative artistic gestures. Monochrome Painting as an exhibition was a physical and conceptual hybrid of sorts, merging corporate design structures with those of museum group exhibitions. Public appeal and recognition of a uniform "look" or identity are the impetus and inspiration for creating the works of art, as well as the exhibition catalogue. The catalogue itself is an artist's book that acts as an adjunct to the exhibition. Hand-tipped, black monochrome plates bear witness to the original proportions of classic monochromatic paintings by such artists as Malevich, Rinehardt, Richter and Ryman, referencing and subtly questioning the historical categorization, aesthetic analysis and systems of judgment we use to invent different imperatives for the return of monochromes throughout recent art history.
