Directed by artist and filmmaker John Boskovich, North, (2001) features artist and writer Gary Indiana reading from Louis-Ferdinand C?line?s novel of the same title. Following the screening, Associate Curator and Director of Education Hamza Walker and exhibiting artist John Neff will interview Gary Indiana. This event will take place in the Film Studies Auditorium, Cobb Hall room 309, 5811 South Ellis Avenue (directly below the gallery). The event is free and open to the public.
In addition to North, Boskovich?s oeuvre includes one other film, Without You I?m Nothing (1990), installations, photo, text, painting, sculpture, design and writing. Says Boskovich, ?North I consider as a kind of code, which attempts to bring unity to many aspects of my inter-genre career. While making North I kept in mind the idea of making a film portrait of novelist Gary Indiana. After reading Gary?s work and seeing him read from his true crime novels Resentment and Three Month Fever, I am convinced as many others are that he is one of the most important American novelists to emerge in some time. His oeuvre recalls Capote, only more politically.?
Gary Indiana is a novelist, journalist, actor and film historian. His publications include art criticism for the Village Voice from 1985 to 1988, two short story collections, and a trilogy of quasi? and non-fiction books about high profile murder cases, and more. The British newspaper The Guardian has labeled him "one of the most important chroniclers of the American psyche.? Indiana also has acted in movies and on stage theaters in New York and London.

Gallery Walk-Through
Doug Ischar
Associate Professor Of Photography at University of Illinois Chicago

Artist and educator Doug Ischar will lead a gallery walk-through at The Renaissance Society on Sunday, March 24, at noon. Ischar will talk about the current exhibition at the museum, photographs by John Neff.
Since the early 1990s, Ischar has worked in sound, video, and photography. His work has evolved from large-scale multimedia installations to single-channel videos that address issues surrounding gay identity, desire, and loss. Currently an associate professor of photography at the University of Illinois, Chicago, he has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus; Photographers Gallery, London; L.A.C.E., Los Angeles; and Museu de Arte Moderna, S?o Paulo.

This concert has received generous support from the France Chicago Center. The critic Andr? Hodeir, a friend and champion of Barraqu??s music, memorably described the Piano Sonata, 1952: ?The Orphean work par excellence, inviting the listener on a journey to the Underworld from which there is no return?. Here, for perhaps the first time in history, Music comes face to face with her archenemy, Silence?. The finale attains a summit of agonizing grandeur; the relentless process is now coming to an end, and music cracks under the inhuman strain, disintegrates, and is sucked into the void.? Choi has performed in recital and with orchestra across 4 continents. He has collaborated with composers including William Bolcom, Elliott Carter, Brian Ferneyhough, Bernard Rands, Sven-David Sandstrom, Bright Sheng, Christian Wolff, Chen Yi and John Zorn. The concert will take place in Bond Chapel 1025 E. 58th St. (On the main quadrangle of the University.)
