The nine painters featured in this catalogue--Cynthia Carlson, Martha Diamond, Harmony Hammond, Margo Margolas, Elizabeth Murray, Howardena Pindell, Rodney Ripps, Joan Thorne, and John Torreano--enliven their painterly gestures with an immediate and resonant sense of texture. Carter Ratcliff's essay characterizes this work as a reaction to the failure of Modernist formalism to achieve its goal of universal clarity.
