In Mike Kelley: Three Projects essays by historian Howard Singerman and artist and critic John Miller address the social, cultural, and material relevance of Kelley's furniture pieces, felt banners, wall hangings, and drawings. Kelley's truly, and sometimes obnoxiously, American aesthetics question the value-based systems of money and taste which dictate our separations of high and low art.

Kelley's exhibition at the Society featured the projects Half a Man, From My Institution to Yours, and premieredPay for Your Pleasure, which has since come to be understood as one of Kelley's most important and defining works.
