KARA WALKER

Exhibition poster

This exhibition poster, designed by the artist, exemplifies Walker's subversive and revelatory manner of re-approaching the aesthetics of 19th century popular culture so as to articulate the bigotry and sexual prejudices that taint the American consciousness. In the brash, heraldic style of multiple typefaces typical of 19th century newspapers and even banners, Walker warns spectators that "this female artisan is wont to illustrate lascivious subjects?it is ill-advised for ladies & children to attend this exhibition."
