New Video, New Europe

A Survey of Eastern European Video
January 11 – February 22, 2004

Ene-Liis Semper
(Estonia)
Oasis, 1999
6'

Squirming at Semper's effort to hold several mouthfuls of dirt only means you're human, and alive, to boot. This piece gives a somewhat literal meaning to the expression "pushing up daisies." Despite the title's associations with a desert isle, a metaphor no doubt referring to Estonia's remoteness, the gesture and the sense of isolation it implies actually refer more to death. This piece belongs to a history of body-based performance video. Although the body is usually the site where subjectivity is secured, for Semper it is an ideal place for mixing metaphors.
