Jelena Radic
(Serbia)
verything Shines Here, 2003
3' 50

A star is born every minute, thanks to the advent of mini dv cameras. Radic spotted one in her young cousin, which isn't difficult when she's wearing a hot pink outfit studded with sequins. Despite the pre-performance giggles, it was not hard coaxing her to perform a routine she clearly spent hours choreographing. It is set to music telling the story of a king who abdicates his crown for love. The physical awkwardness of pre-pubescence is completely overcome by grace and sass. Although Radic was reminded of her youth, when she did similar routines, it is not simply for nostalgia's sake that art, in this instance, gladly yields to life. Her cousin's radiant self-expression is the goal sought by every artist.
